The Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) Program assists newcomer students and their families in adjusting to the new school environment and the community. They will work in Sun West School Division schools in the following communities: Beechy, Dinsmore, Eatonia, Elrose, Eston, Harris, Kyle, Loreburn, Lucky Lake, Outlook, and Rosetown. The SWIS worker will be under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of the Southwest Newcomer Welcome Centre and will be responsible for the following:
1. Establish and maintain contact with the newcomer families in order to determine their needs and issues, including conducting needs assessment and referrals;
2. Connect families to resources and services in the schools and the community;
3. Facilitate access to resources and services where there are language and cultural barriers;
4. Promote cultural sensitivity links between school staff and newcomer families.
5. Advocate for clients to ensure that proper services are delivered;
6. Plan and deliver programs and activities for clients, eg: after school, leadership, summer, etc.
7. Write reports and grant proposals;
8. Work from home when the need arises;
9. Perform other related tasks.
This SWIS Worker will be based in Rosetown, SK.
Travel within the west-central region of Saskatchewan is required for this position, applicant must have a valid driver's license and their own vehicle. Experience working in a multicultural setting and/or knowledge of another language is an asset.
