Somers Lab at the University of Regina is seeking a Wildlife Field Assistant based out of Estevan, Saskatchewan to assist a MSc student with research focused on understanding pre- and during-construction effects of a utility scale solar energy facility on vegetation and wildlife communities in southern Saskatchewan.
We will be conducting vegetation surveys, and bird and wildlife surveys using automated recording units and trail cameras on the proposed solar facility site and reference sites 10 km southwest of Estevan. We will be conducting fieldwork as a group of two or more in crop fields and pastures. Fieldwork will involve driving on highways and rural roads and walking for long distances to conduct bird and vegetation surveys.
We will prepare for the field season by scouting all the sites and setting up equipment during May. Majority of the fieldwork will be conducted during May, June and July. August will be dedicated to gathering equipment, organizing and processing data.
Due to avian activity, work will be focused on early mornings and afternoons. Working hours will be dynamic and will depend on the time of the season, weather and the task at hand with the potential of working over weekends.
