Description

The casual assistant librarian, employed by the local library board, assists with a wide variety of public library services to the community under the direction of the Branch Librarian. They are thoroughly knowledgeable of library policies and procedures plus have a comprehensive understanding of the region. Work methods are governed by established procedures, but the employee must be able to exercise independent judgment, initiative, and work cooperatively with others. Accuracy is essential.

DUTIES
1. Assist with the efficient operation of the library including: manual and automated circulation, reference and interlibrary loan services, overdue procedures, and mail.
2. Assist with the accurate and time effective sorting, shelving, and shelf-reading of library materials.
3. Assist patrons in locating materials.
4. Assist in the maintenance of manual and automated records.
5. Actively promote the library through regular contact with: community groups, schools, and local councils.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS
1. Completion of grade twelve (12) or G.E.D.
2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. The ability to work cooperatively, be diplomatic, and flexible.
3. Ability to work well without supervision and learn assigned tasks readily.
4. Ability to keep regular library hours.
5. Present an acceptable Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check before being offered a position in a Wapiti Regional Library branch.

DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
1. Computer literate including familiarity with the Windows operating system, email, Microsoft Word and Excel. Able to search the internet.
2. An interest in books and reading.
3. Previous experience within a library.

DURATION
On-call, occasional basis, employed at irregular intervals
