Job Summary:
The Needle Exchange Educator works with the Needle Exchange Program Coordinator in the ongoing operation of the Queen City Needle Exchange Program, operated by AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan Inc. (APSS). The Needle Exchange Educator will also facilitate community engagement sessions with diverse individuals and communities. They will also be expected to provide support to APSS staff with other duties as requested.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Needle Exchange Program
The Needle Exchange Program Educator will provide sterile syringes, and other harm reduction supplies, written and verbal education, and referral information for the NEP clients at APSS. This position is to work Mondays from 9:00-5:00 pm, statutory holidays 12:30 to 4:00 pm with the flexibility to work after business hours and weekends as needed.
Job Responsibilities:
Dispense harm reduction supplies such as sterile syringes and other safer injection equipment
Exchange used needles for new needles in accordance with the SHA guidelines
Promote safe disposal, including collection and disposal of used syringes
Assist with the development and delivery of educational programs that are relevant to the program;
Track distribution of new and returned needles through TrackVia, conduct surveys and provide education in accordance with SHA guidelines;
Provide information on and referral to other health and social services and treatment options;
Engage with clients on a consistent and non-judgmental manner to develop rapport with clients;
Package education and needle exchange program supplies;
Handle and store used needles in accordance with SHA guidelines;
Encourage HIV and HCV testing;
JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Knowledge of the principles of harm reduction
Excellent verbal communication skills, including strong interpersonal skills
Personal transportation with valid driver's license and the ability to travel in Regina and South.
