Description

Deputy Sheriffs provide security services as assigned within the Courts of Saskatchewan to ensure a safe and secure environment for all users of court facilities.

Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for the safe and timely transportation of persons to and from court locations across the province (e.g., correctional centers, RCMP detachments, municipal police agencies, etc.). They are also responsible for ensuring documents are accurate for persons being released and/or held in custody and information is kept confidential at all times.

As Peace Officers, Deputy Sheriffs operate under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Court Officials Act, 2012, and the Court Security Act, 2007. Additionally, Deputy Sheriffs as Special Constables have authority under The Police Act 1990. They are armed with force option tools and may be required to use necessary force while performing their duties to protect people from harm.

Once hired, successful candidates will be required to attend and successfully pass a mandatory Saskatchewan Deputy Sheriff Training Academy course, including becoming provincially certified to carry a firearm and completing Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) and Defensive Tactics. Training is approximately nine weeks (Monday to Friday) and will take place in Regina.

The successful candidates will have knowledge of the justice system/law enforcement. Typically, the knowledge and skills required for this position are obtained through relevant work experience in the justice system, law enforcement, court/legal-related environments and may be combined with relevant education in criminal/human justice or human science programs.
