Settlement Worker in Schools (SWIS) Program assists newcomer students and their families in adjusting to the new school environment and the community. The SWIS worker will be under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and will be responsible for the following:
1. Establish and maintain contact with the newcomer families to determine their needs and issues, including conducting needs assessment and referrals;
2. Connect families to resources and services in the schools and the community;
3. Facilitate access to resources and services where there are language and cultural barriers;
4. Promote cultural sensitivity links between school staff and newcomer families.
5. Advocate for clients to ensure that proper services are delivered;
6. Plan and deliver programs and activities for clients
eg: after School, leadership, summer, etc.
7. Reporting and grant proposal writing;
8. Able to work from home when the need arises.
9. Other related tasks.
Travel within the southwest region is required for this position, the applicant must have a valid driver's license and own vehicle. Experience working in a multicultural setting and/or knowledge of another language is an asset.
