Reports to: Director of PAGC Education
Location: Education Sub-Office (Cottage 11)
Description: To support initiatives which protect, promote and enhance the Denesuline Language
and Culture programming. The consultant keeps informed of current international Indigenous Language and Culture programs that are available and applicable for the PAGC Dene schools and students. It is the responsibility of the consultant to forward new curricula and language development information to the PAGC schools.
Duties: Under the supervision of the Director of Education, the consultant will work with schools by assisting teachers in developing First Nations language and culture programs and advising education authorities in relevant program policy and direction.
The responsibilities include assessment of existing language and culture programs in school, developing a date/resource base for immersion and bilingual, first language curriculum, and culturally relevant materials in English to Dene. The consultant will also develop a resource pool of expertise and assistant in the development of immersion, bilingual and first language education programming in the Athabasca schools.
Assist with planning and organizing staff development activities for language and culture. Maintain regular school visits and provide supports for the Dene language and culture programs in the schools. Develop and produce literature, workbooks and other relevant teaching resources for the Athabasca schools.
Education: A Master's Degree or an Indigenous Studies plus a Professional "A" B.Ed. a must, and a strong background in curriculum development along with knowledge and expertise in traditional First Nations education, must speak First Nations language and be able to travel extensively. Consultant must have approximately five years teaching a Denesuline language program.
