The Far-Infrared beamline is a state of the art facility for High-resolution Infrared spectroscopy and Microscopy. The Far-Infrared beamline uses the high brightness of the infrared radiation generated by the Synchrotron to provide high signal to noise infrared spectra.
Position Summary: Reporting to the FarInfrared Staff Scientist, the successful applicant will provide training and support to users and assist in the general operation of the beamline. This includes maintaining beamline equipment and assisting in development projects on the beamline. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to assist in collaborative research projects involving the Far-IR facility. Since the Far Infrared beamline is operational 24/7, the ability to work on-call, evenings and weekends is a requirement of the position.
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have completed a M.Sc. in a scientific discipline related to the position (physics, chemistry). A B.Sc. level with at least 3 years of relevant work experience in a research-focused setting will also be considered. Familiarity with Infrared Spectroscopy and Fourier Transform spectrometers is essential. Experience with synchrotron science would be considered an asset. Good written and oral communication skills are required. Candidates must have the ability to work without supervision and possess good organizational skills. Experience in one or more of the following areas would also be consider an asset:
- High pressure studies using Infrared Microscopy with Diamond Anvil Cells
- High Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy on gases
- Experiments involving Glow or RF discharges
- Experience working with Molecular beams
- Experience working with gasses
- Experience with Optics
- Computer programming
