Description

In response to the Syrian Refugee resettlement efforts and added numbers of Government Assisted Refugees coming to Prince Albert, we are expanding our team. Settlement Workers in Schools assist refugee and immigrant students along with their families in their transition to a new culture. This is a school based position that aims to assist families to better understand the education system and provide information and referrals to education and community resources.

Core Tasks Include:

- Conduct needs assessments with students and their families
- Provide newcomer students and families with information and referrals to education and community resources
- Plan and facilitate Orientation for Newcomer Workshops and Peer Leader training days
- Build and maintain relationships with settlement workers, teachers and administration
- Crisis counselling and referrals for families, as needed
- Increase school, and public, awareness of settlement and newcomer issues through presentations, meetings and community involvement
- All other tasks as requested by Manager

Skills, knowledge and effort required:

- Ability to work with diverse groups of people in a collaborative, culturally aware manner
- Effective multitasking, priority setting and organization skills
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respectful, professional relationships
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and on a flexible work schedule
- Sound judgement and the ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to new and challenging situations

Education and Experience:

- University degree in social sciences, humanities or similar is preferred
- Ability to speak, read or write Arabic considered a strong asset
- Direct experience with the SWIS program would be considered a definite asset
- Experience working with diverse teams and Service Provider Organizations
- Experience in cross cultural settings
