The department assistant will prepare, co-ordinate, instruct and assess practicum components of the plant sciences undergraduate academic program. This position is a resource for faculty and staff involved with teaching in the department.
Reporting to the Department Head, and with direction from faculty, the Department Assistant demonstrates professional judgement to ensure practicums meet program goals to the satisfaction of students and faculty. A variety of issues will require discretionary decision making; decisions may impact individual students and the long-term success of academic programs. The Department Assistant will organize and supervise off-campus field trips throughout the academic year. Plant samples will be collected off-site during the summer; plants will be grown for teaching purposes; and, a useful collection of weeds, diseases and insects for teaching purposes will be established and maintained. The position is responsible for the management of risk with regard to student participation in field trips, and as such will develop productive relationships with the appropriate administrative units. Productive and positive relationships will be developed and maintained with faculty, students and other colleagues. There will be multiple requests for assistance requiring the ability to prioritize. Some situations may be stressful, requiring tact and diplomacy, flexibility and good judgement.
