Description

Working under the direction of the Health Director and with clinical guidance from the Community Health Nurse, the Parent Mentor will primarily provide health mentoring support to families, mothers, infants and young children.  This position will assist families in developing parenting skills by providing information, advise and support; focusing on culture and tradition to emphasis healthy nurturing, role modeling positive behavior to families and the community at large (no drinking or smoking) and linking families with appropriate services if needed. This position will also work closely with the Community Health Nurse in regards to assisting and supporting the Maternal Child Health Program through the development and maintenance with community case management processes and utilizing community based resources where appropriate.  This position may also work  with children afflicted by FASD to seek the ongoing counselling and support they need to thrive in their families, with friends in their schooling, as well as in the four essential segments of their lives, the Spiritual, emotional, mental and physical dimensions of human life. The Parent Mentor manages a caseload of clients and their families and will provide practical assistance by making and keeping appointments for family visits and facilitating programs and events that offer fun, sober and engaging activities and complete required forms for each program and ensure charting is up to date.
Education & Experience:
The successful candidate will be respected in the community and possess a grade 12 or equivalent with successful completion of first aid training with a valid certificate.    Experience working with First Nations band/organization is an asset.
