Description

To prepare clear, consistent and accurate construction cost estimates, while considering variables such as scope of work, design, schedules, function of space, safety, and university and industry standards.

The Estimator reports directly to the Manager, Estimating Office in the Facilities Management Division (FMD) and works with the client community, project managers, designers, engineers, purchasers, contractors and zone managers. The incumbent will work with the project managers to assist in the development of project scope. The estimator is required to build and maintain positive relationships with a broad range of internal and external groups and individuals to ensure a collaborative and problem solving environment. The work is high volume and complex. Critical decisions are required on a routine basis. A high level of concentration is required for estimating multiple projects with competing priorities and deadlines. Professional judgment is required to understand and consider university objectives, policies and federal and provincial laws, codes, standards and regulations. This position will require a thorough knowledge of current construction market conditions to be able to apply to estimates. Mental stress will be moderate to high depending on the complexity of assignments, area of involvement and related issues. Incumbent works in an office setting with regular visits to construction sites. Exposure to fumes, dust, noise, dirt, and safety hazards, etc. may occasionally occur. The consequence of decisions and the financial implications to the institution is high as error could result in significant financial loss or increased operational costs to the university.
