Description

Overseeing/managing select aspects of a multifaceted research program involving graduate/undergraduate students and technical staff. Overseeing daily research activities utilizing extensive analytical facilities. The research program assesses ecotoxicological hazards and risks associated with key chemical contaminants and their mixtures coming from global chemical industries including Canadian resource industries (oil sands, U mining), and the development of a more complete understanding of contaminant movement availability and effects. A PhD in environmental chemistry or a related discipline is required as is extensive experience in instrumental and bioanalytical techniques for evaluating responses to trace/ultra-trace levels of organic contaminants. Extensive experience in the analysis of organic environmental contaminants particularly chlorinated dioxins/furans and PCBs, and perfluorinated chemicals. This must include hands-on experience in extraction, cleanup/preparation techniques and with instruments including but not limited to GC/ECD, GC/MS(low, and high res), HPLC, HPLC/MS(tandem MS, time of flight MS, Orbitrap MS). The use of these techniques for the analysis of the analysis of perfluorinated chemicals, brominated flame retardants and constituents of oil sands process affected water (OSPW) are an essential requirement of the position so the successful candidate must have no less than 6 months post-doctoral experience. Similarly, experience with operation, maintenance and data processing of high resolution GC/MS and LC/MS systems (Thermo Q-exactive) is required as is experience of data processing and QA/QC requirements for high-resolution PCDD/F and PCB analysis and the analysis of PBDE compounds and their metabolites. Biochemical techniques include the use of biochemical markers of chemical/environmental stressors and the use of biochemical responses in cell bioassay systems to assess the biological potencies of chemicals and mixtures.
