Description

Working out of the Eagle Creek Unit near Plenty, SK, the Farrowing Technician's responsibilities include:

- Ensure proper handling and comfort of sows, gilts and piglets
- Carry out feeding routine for farrowing pigs
- Recognize farrowing related problems and provide basic assistance
- Recognize and treat common farrowing unit diseases and disorders
- Monitor pig health and recognize signs of disorder (abortions, discharges, off feed, mastitis) and report concerns
- Perform routine procedures with new birthed piglets (castration, clip tails and teeth, iron shots)
- Perform cross fostering of piglets to ensure viability
- Perform weaning procedures
- Weigh and transport pigs
- Provide water for animals and perform routine maintenance on water drinkers
- Interpret labels, handle and administer medications and vaccines
- Ensure the Unit's biosecurity protocol is followed by all staff and visitors
- Operate a high pressure washer and ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards for the Unit are met
- Follow safe manure management procedures when cleaning out manure pits
- Monitor and maintain proper ventilation and temperature using automated control system
- Ensure accurate records are kept and submitted in a timely fashion to head office (farrowing logs and weaning cards)
- Responsible to act safely in performing job duties at all times
- Reporting safety concerns to the safety representative and/or Unit Manager
- Other duties as required
