Description

The Literacy Assistant will provide support to the Literacy Coordinator. She/He will assist the Literacy Coordinator in the provision of programs and will be responsible for filing, sorting, and reorganizing paperwork and materials.  This year's special project is to develop, plan, and carry out a summer program for elementary students who speak English as an Additional Language.

Qualifications:
Position is supported by Canada Summer Jobs initiative- eligible applicants must be:
* between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
* have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
* be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
* be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation & regulations.

Primary Responsibilities:
Assists the Literacy Coordinator to:
- deliver programs and provide services; plan & prepare lessons, crafts & activities.
- Constructs literacy tools & resources
- Files & organizes paperwork & other materials.

Duties/Tasks:
- Assisting with the delivery of literacy programs including English Summer Fun (a summer English as an Additional Language program for elementary students), Talk Time (an English as an Additional Language conversation circle), and Nature Smarts (a summer literacy program for children)
- Filing
- Putting together StorySacks under the supervision of the Literacy Coordinator.
- Organizing files to remove duplicate materials and to archive material for improved storage.
- Organizing literacy materials to remove outdated materials.
- Organizing project materials for improved access and storage.

Applicants must have excellent English speaking, listening, reading, & writing skills in order to carry out the tasks and responsibilities of the Literacy Assistant.
