Description

Under the authority of the Daycare Coordinator, the cook provides food services in the child care center, based on the Aboriginal version of Canadas Food Guide, and in accordance with the centers philosophy and policies.

TASKS
- Plan well-balanced and economical menus, with assistance from the STC Nutritionist;
- Display 4 week menu and the daily menu on the parent board; keep them on file;
- Prepare lunches as well as morning and afternoon snacks based on traditional and non-traditional menus, following the Canada Food Guide;
- Identify food requirements and make a list of required food/ kitchen supplies;
- Ensure high quality and proper storage of food(s);
- Help Daycare and Headstart staff serve food at mealtimes;
- Adapt menus for children who have allergies;
- Keep the kitchen and food storage areas clean;
- Clean dishes, utensils and cooking equipment according to EHO requirements;
-  Make sure that household appliances are used correctly;
-  Attend to the children occasionally, when requested by the Daycare Coordinator;
-  Attend staff meetings; and
-  other duties as assigned by the Day Care Coordinator within the scope of the role.

QUALIFICATIONS
-  Knowledge of techniques of traditional and non-traditional cooking and kitchen management (meal planning, stock-keeping, purchasing etc.);
-  Knowledge of the educational aspects of nutrition as they relate to the development of children;
- Safe Food Handling certificate and knowledge of the Canada Food Guide;
- Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System Certificate;
-  First Aid/CPR, Level C Certificate;
-  If required to work with children to cover staff breaks, must obtain Early Childhood Orientation ( 120 hours program) during their employment; and
-  Completion of the Nutrition Coordinator Independent Study Course, offered by North West Regional College would be an asset.
