The Advocate for Children and Youth is an independent Officer of the Legislature and is non-partisan, objective and independent of the government of the day. The office engages in advocacy, investigations and public education on behalf of children and youth in the Province of Saskatchewan. We have an exciting and challenging opportunity for the position of Advocate.
Reporting to the Director of Operations, this position works both independently and within a team environment to advocate on behalf of children and youth on matters brought to the Office by individuals and groups or raised by the Advocate for Children and Youth on his own initiative and ensures the advocacy services are conducted in a timely manner and in accordance with The Advocate for Children and Youth Act, the Office's Operational Principles, the Office's Guiding Principles - Children and Youth First.
A university degree in a related field of the Social Sciences (Social Work, Human Justice, Sociology etc.) or equivalent combination of post secondary education and experience with extensive experience in direct service provision to children and youth is desirable. Extensive knowledge and understanding of child and youth serving government structures, programs, policies and legislation is required to advocate for compliance with standards and assess the appropriateness and comprehensiveness of services provided to child or youth. Knowledge of community development, community outreach, consultation processes and community-based and non-government organizations is also required as well as extensive experience in conducting investigations, systemic analysis and policy analysis related to the provision of services to children. Applicants must possess expertise in negotiation, mediation and problem solving.
