McCallum Home in Saskatoon requires caring, compassionate, empathetic, and enthusiastic employees for the role of Community Residential Worker.
Providing direct support to individuals, focusing on their holistic well-being, guided by their unique needs and preferences is vital. A key component in this role is the implementation of individualized and least restrictive behavior support strategies. During time of behavioural escalations, a calm approach while assessing and evaluating the situation for any immediate risks to the individual or others is necessary for successful outcomes. Effective communication is essential: using clear and simple language, active listening and avoiding confrontation. You will apply de-escalation techniques maintaining a neutral demeanor, offering choices to give the individual a sense of control, and may use distraction to redirect their focus. It is also expected that you remain with the individual to prevent self-harm, encourage self-soothing activities, and offer reassurance about their safety.
Typically, the level of knowledge and skills for this position is obtained through 1-year post-secondary education in a related human service field such as Disability Support Worker, Psychology or Social Work and/or gained through related experience working in a therapeutic capacity with people with intellectual disabilities who may display complex and challenging behaviours. CLSD, Crisis and Respite Services provides a thorough onboarding that includes safety training required for the position.
*Please note, due to the nature of the position employees will be exposed to the risk of violent (behavioural) situations in which PART training reinforces safety concerns and assists in precautionary measures.
