Description

The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) would like to invite all those qualified and interested in becoming one of SARMs 6 Plant Health Technical Advisors (PHTAs) to submit their application.  
Candidates must be a licenced Professional Agrologist or be eligible to apply for a licence and registered with the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists, as well as be legally able to work in Canada.
The PHTA must have a class 5 drivers licence. The PHTA will participate in crop pest surveys and work alone in rural areas of the province, under variable climate conditions. Candidates must be willing to travel on gravel roads and work flexible hours.
This position within SARM Division 1 will undertake 3 main roles:
1.Educate Saskatchewan Rural Municipalities (RMs) on how best to undertake duties required of them via The Plant Health Act and The Weed Control Act of Saskatchewan;
o Implement communication strategies and materials to ensure RMs and landowners/ratepayers are aware of their duties regarding plant health and weed control legislation; and
o Assist in developing templates for RMs (e.g., RM bylaws, ratepayer communication letters, etc.).

2. Provide education, training, and support for appointed Pest Control Officers (PCOs) and Weed Inspectors (WIs), and First Nation Land Managers to ensure a more proactive and consistent approach to monitoring and controlling all regulated agricultural crop pests and prohibited/noxious weeds across the province.

3. Under the guidance of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture (SMA) Crop Specialists monitor, survey and report on pests and prohibited/noxious weed occurrences.
o Coordinate and participate in pest/plant surveys within the Division as required by SMA
o Collect data back from PCOs/WIs appointed by RMs regarding pests/plants
o PHTAs work together with SMA to develop best practices to be promoted provincially
o Monitor and organize the redistribution of biological control agents
