Description

The Food Security Coordinator will be the main support for the Food Security and Climate Change Manager The purpose of this position is to help develop and solidify Muskeg Lake Cree Nations food security initiative while also engaging our members and increasing education and awareness about all aspects of food production and preservation.

Working in the off season will focus on planning next seasons food production, finding funding and writing grants, organizing workshops with students and community members, overseeing our demonstration hydroponics facility, and supporting the development of a business plan for gradual economic development through our food systems.

A large part of our food mission is increasing community awareness and interest in gardening and food production/preservation. This role will be responsible for offering support for Band members and youth in various ways, such as organizing training or workshops in all matters related to food.  

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
    Oversee all food-production locations at Muskeg Lake, namely the Food Forest, Greenhouse, and Health and Wellness Centre Native plant garden;
    Collect and organize data on what is grown, inputs, outputs, etc.;
    Daily oversight of seasonal staff and summer students;
    Offer hands-on work training and modeling to staff when directing their work;
    Work with other Band departments as needed to achieve goals and objectives;
    Seek out and work to acquire funding/grants to develop our food systems;
    Work with the Food Security Committee to guide the direction of the Food Security Department and its development;
    Include the youth as much as possible and provide them with hands-on experience and education. Work with the school staff and prevention department to achieve this;
    Facilitate food-related workshops for community members and staff;
